Childhood rivals Print and Rey are casted in a new and upcoming drama, but a twist of fate switches their soul. How will they navigate their new lives and overcome their differences and bad blood
การวิเคราะห์
I find queendom to be a show that executes a classic fantastical trope: body swap extremely well and it was surprisingly realistic and grounded. The body sway was utilized to explore the characters in depth and helps me (and i think both of them) understand themselves, their struggles, motivation and personalities. It enables them to empathize with each other even though there was bad blood. The sapphic relationship portrayal between the two leads is healthy and realistic, their growth feels earned and the tension was palpable from the very beginning (even if they were oblivious of that fact). Talking about tension, the show elevates these moments a lot by the tasteful choice of soundtracks and it does not shy away from silence when needed. I am not well-versed in cinematography, but to me, the color grading and palette were refreshing. It is colourful but not over the top. The styling also reflects this, Rey and Print were associated with the colors brown and pink respectively. In the beginning their wardrobe consists of those colors, but they started to mix together alongside their relationship progression. The whole show was loaded with parallels (between the side pairings and the lead, the show inside the show and more), callbacks and you can see the inspirations from classic shows such as DEBS and Bottoms sprinkled throughout. How can i forget the side couples, they were so entertaining, but weren't put without purpose. They are very much integral to our leads' progression. I do have very few aspects that I wished were tackled much more in depth in Queendom, notably the conflict between Rey's mom and Print. The resolution was not farfetched at all and I can see why Print's forgiveness was easily earned. It aligns well with the characterization, but it wasn't very satisfying because it didn't address the heart of the issue - classism.
สรุป
Overall, this story is well balanced, the trope serves well as a medium of characterization. The ending was satisfying and heartwarming without loose ends. All shows have their flaws, but what makes Queendom stand out and touch the hearts of many is the sincerity and passion behind it. It is truly "a show made by women, for women" as said by the director and producer of the show. I think Queendom will join a few selects shows as a comfort series of mine :)
